On Wednesday night, free agency started with a bang. A handy adage to remember for this particular time in the NFL is that fools rush in where angels fear to tread and while perennial also-rans like the Dolphins and Texans spunked money on questionable talent, the Bengals kept relatively quiet, securing the futures of their own George Iloka, Adam Jones and TJ Johnson. Marvin Jones leaves the Bengals: Reaction

So that’s it for Marvin Jones. One of the best-loved players on the team, he accepted an $8million-per-year deal to join the Detroit Lions. With the free agency merry-go-round only mere days away, there has been much talk of it during this week’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The Bengals’ Director Of Player Personnel, the excellent Duke Tobin, took to the podium and stressed that the team is focused on bringing back as many of its free agents as possible. This is the Bengals’ tried and tested method, but there are still huge question marks, particularly surrounding the wide receiver position. The season may be done and dusted, but a key off-season looms large for the Bengals. Along with the extensive changes to the coaching roster, many players are entering free agency and there’s no doubt that when the season kicks off again in September, the Bengals’ roster may look very different. Key starters are set to be free agents and holes on the team will need to be filled through the draft and with free agents from other teams. The Bengals were a team on the verge of greatness this year, which was snatched from them by Andy’s thumb injury – can they find the missing pieces to get them to Superbowl glory? In this first piece, Jamie Wroe looks at some of the players set to be leaving the Bengals, and in future blogs will look at targets free agency could offer to us.
